RESUMO O atraso da linguagem é um motivo frequente de referência a uma consulta de pediatria. As consequências do seu diagnóstico e orientação tardios são diversas e com repercussões que se prolongam até à vida adulta. Ao pediatra cabe o papel de identificar as crianças em risco ou com atraso da linguagem, determinar a sua causa e orientar para uma equipa multidisciplinar especializada nestes distúrbios, que efectuará uma avaliação pormenorizada do problema bem como a sua abordagem terapêutica. Os autores fazem uma revisão do mecanismo da comunicação oral, da aquisição da linguagem, dos sinais de alarme, da classificação dos distúrbios, das características clínicas dos principais distúrbios e do modo de actuação perante um atraso da linguagem. ABSTRACT Language delay is a frequent reason of referal to a paediatric consultation. The consequences of its delayed diagnosis and orientation are diverse and with repercussions throughout adult life. The role of the pediatrician is to identify the children in risk or with language delay, to determine its cause and to guide for a multidisciplinary team specialized in these disorders. This team will make a detailed and deep evaluation of the problem as well as its therapy. The authors discuss the anatomy of the verbal communication, the acquisition of the language, the alarm signs, and the classification of the disorders, the clinical characteristics of the main disorders and the management of the language delay.
