Abstract(s)

As células estaminais são conhecidas há já algumas décadas, mas só recentemente se adquiriu o conhecimento suficiente que permitiu o seu crescimento fora do organismo, in vitro, por longos períodos de tempo. No que respeita à sua localização no organismo, os principais tipos de células estaminais são: as do embrião, as da linha germinal de fetos e as de alguns órgãos do indivíduo adulto. Apesar de todos os avanços da biologia actual, este tipo de experimentação relacionado com as novas tentativas terapêuticas que usam células estaminais levanta problemas éticos, não só pelos efeitos no receptor, como aos ligados à possível obtenção deste tipo de células, ao uso a que estas possam ser submetidas, bem como à investigação efectuada com células de embriões humanos. Os maiores problemas éticos são o modo como a defender a vida, a integridade e a dignidade do ser humano. ABSTRACT Stem cells have been known for some decades, but only recently has the knowledge allowing them to grow for long periods of time out of the organism, in vitro, been acquired. As to their localization in the organism, the main types of stem cells are: from the embryo, from the germinal line in the foetus and from some organs in adults. Despite all the advances in biology, these types of experiments for new attempts to use stem cells therapeutically raise not only ethical problems concerning their effects in the recipient but also in how to obtain them, and the uses to which they may be put as well as investigation using cells from human embryos. The major ethical problems are the way in which life may be protected and the integrity and dignity of the human being.
