- Dysgenetic male pseudohermaphroditismPublication . Proença, E.; Freitas, S.; Fonseca, M.; Figueiredo, S.; Rodrigues, C.Acta Med Port. 2001 Sep-Dec;14(5-6):511-4. [Dysgenetic male pseudohermaphroditism] [Article in Portuguese] Proença E, Freitas S, Fonseca M, Figueiredo S, Rodrigues C. Serviço de Cirurgia Pediátrica, Hospital Maria Pia, Porto. Abstract Dysgenetic male pseudohermaphroditism is the result of a defect of testis development that encompasses a large clinical heterogeneity. It is characterized by bilateral dysgenetic testis, absence of mullerian regression, ambiguous genitalia and/or stigmata of Turner's syndrome in the majority of the cases. Typically, these individuals have either a 46,XY or 45,X/46,XY karyotype. The authors present four cases of dysgenetic male psudohermaphroditism, with ages of diagnosis between 1 month and 17 years old. The first had a male phenotype with stigmata of Turner's syndrome and the others ambiguous genitalia. Two patients were 45,X/46,XY and 45X/47,XYY mosaics and the other two were 46,XY. Gonadal karyotyping showed mosaicism (45,X/46,XY) in all four cases. In the first case was programed orquidectomy; all the others assigned a male gender, with regular follow-up until the puberty. - Rheumatic hand's clinical, functional and imagiological correlations following metacarpophalangeal joint silicone arthroplastyPublication . Figueiredo, S.; Pereira, A.; Silva, M.; Leite, L.; Costa, G.; Silva, C.Objective: Evaluation of rheumatoid hand-associated metacarpophalangeal joint silicone arthroplasty most often relies on functional scores alone. This study aimed to understand the correlation between perceived and observed function, strength, and alignment. Methods: Cross-sectional study including all 11 women (15 hands) submitted to second to fifth metacarpophalangeal joint arthroplasty due to rheumatoid arthritis involvement for a time period of seven years. Measurements relied on the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire, Lafayette Purdue Pegboard, pinch and grip strength, and analysis of a lateral "OK-sign" X-ray view. Correlation analysis used Spearman's coefficient, assuming statistical significance for p-values < 0.05. Results: Objective function was strongly correlated with all other variables (p < 0.05), while perceived function failed to correlate with articular alignment in both measurements (p = 0.240 and p = 0.354). Strength and alignment were also strongly correlated (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Most measurements strongly correlate with each other, with emphasis on objective dexterity measurement.
ABSTRACT Headaches and vomiting are frequent complaints in childhood. The authors report a case of a 9 year old boy presenting incoercible vomiting and headache. The clinical evolution and diagnostic investigations revealed a cerebellar astrocytoma. Pylocitic astrocytomas are tumors with good prognosis. When located in regions that allow complete resection they can be cured. We emphasize the importance of a thorough anamnesis for a correct diagnosis and the need for follow-up.
