- Do you know this syndrome?Publication . Rosmaninho, A.; Pinto-Almeida, T.; Fernandes, I.; Machado, S.; Selores, M.Abstract Lipomas are among the most common tumors seen in the soft body parts and usually are solitary lesions. The authors report a case of a male patient that presented for evaluation of multiple subcutaneous nodules that caused important functional and cosmetic impairment. The diagnosis of familial multiple lipomatosis was made. Physicians should be able to recognize and characterize this rare disease.
- Exuberant cutaneous ulcers on the buttocks caused by multi-resistantPublication . Pinto-Almeida, T.; Rosmaninho, A.; Lobo, I.; Alves, R.; Selores, M.Cutaneous infection develops because of environmental and local factors, host immunity, and organism adherence and virulence. The authors report a case of exuberant cutaneous ulcers on the buttocks of a diabetic patient. Microbiologic examination allowed the identification of Klebsiella pneumoniae and complete resolution was achieved with the appropriate antibiotic
- Pellagra as the initial presentation of Crohn diseasePublication . Rosmaninho, A.; Sanches, M.; Fernandes, I.; Pinto-Almeida, T.; Vilaça, S.; Oliveira, A.; Selores, M.Pellagra is a nutritional disease caused by the deficiency of niacin. We describe a case of pellagra as the initial presentation of Crohn disease, which has been rarely described in the literature.
- Penile Kaposi sarcoma: A case of complete resolution with highly active antiretroviral therapy alonePublication . Pinto-Almeida, T.; Torres, T.; Rosmaninho, A.; Sanches, M.; Alves, R.; Caetano, M.; Selores, M.Kaposi sarcoma remains an important cause of morbidity in HIV-infected patients. Regardless of the recent pharmacological progress, treatment of this malignancy is still disappointing. We report the case of a patient with Kaposi sarcoma in an unusual localization, the penis, which completely resolved with highly active antiretroviral therapy alone
- Photoletter to the editor: Calcinosis cutis in a burn scarPublication . Rosmaninho, A.; Carvalho, S.; Lobo, I.Calcinosis cutis is a rare condition characterized by the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Dystrophic calcinosis cutis appears as a result of local tissue damage or abnormalities, such as alterations in extra-cellular matrix proteins or subcutaneous tissue with normal calcium and phosphate serum levels. It has been rarely described as a late complication of burns. Latency periods of 15-54 years have been reported. We describe the case of a 57-year-old man with dystrophic calcinosis cutis in a burn scar, which developed 42 years after the skin injury. The condition was successfully treated with surgical excision.
- Syndrome in questionPublication . Rosmaninho, A.; Carvalho, S.; Oujo, E.; Horta, M.Neurofibromatosis is extremely variable in its presentation. Segmental neurofibromatosis (SNF), which corresponds to NF-type 5 in the Riccardi classification, is a rare disorder. It may go unrecognized if few lesions are observed. We present a case of segmental neurofibromatosis in a 28 year-old patient who presented with multiple papules and nodules distributed in dermatomal fashion on the trunk. The histopathological examination of the lesions revealed a non-encapsulated, well-circumscribed spindle cell neoplasm, which was consistent with neurofibromas.
- Transient peripheral facial nerve paralysis after local anesthetic procedurePublication . Rosmaninho, A.; Lobo, I.; Caetano, M.; Taipa, R.; Magalhães, M.; Costa, V.; Selores, M.Complications may arise after laser therapy of the face. The most common ones are bleeding and infections; facial nerve paresis or paralysis is rarely reported. We describe a case of a transient peripheral facial nerve paralysis after laser therapy of an epidermal verrucous nevus localized at the left preauricular area.
- Vulvoperineal Crohn's disease responsive to metronidazolePublication . Rosmaninho, A.; Sanches, M.; Salgado, M.; Alves, R.; Selores, M.Crohn's disease is a multisystem chronic granulomatous inflammatory disease that primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract. In the majority of the cases, the cutaneous manifestations follow the intestinal disease, but occasionally dermatological lesions are the inaugural event and may constitute the only sign of the disease. Vulvoperineal involvement is rare, may precede bowel symptoms by months to years and may go unrecognized. Due to the paucity of reports of Crohn's disease at this location and in the absence of randomized trials, there are no standard treatments for the cutaneous disease. We describe the case of a 47 year-old woman with vulvoperineal Crohn's disease without digestive involvement, that was successfully managed with metronidazole.
